CodeNeter

Planning and modes

When to use Agent, Plan, and Ask, and how planning works.

The mode picker in the message box sets how CodeNeter approaches your next message. Agent is the default, and each conversation keeps the mode you choose.

  • Agent makes changes. It investigates, edits files, and runs commands.
  • Plan works out an approach with you before any code changes.
  • Ask answers questions and suggests approaches without changing your project.

Plan

How it works

CodeNeter starts by researching the code involved. If the request is ambiguous, or there are several reasonable ways to do it, it asks you to decide before going further. It then writes a plan and shows it in the conversation for review.

Review the plan in the chat. Choose Keep planning and say what to change, and CodeNeter revises it. When it's right, choose Implement: the conversation switches to Agent and CodeNeter carries out the plan.

Plans are saved as Markdown in .codeneter/plans/ in your project. Open on the plan shows the full file.

When to use it

  • The change spans several files or parts of the system.
  • There are competing approaches and you want to choose one.
  • The scope isn't clear yet.
  • The decision affects the architecture, such as data models or how modules connect.

For a small, well-defined change, Agent is usually quicker.

Agent

Use Agent when you know what you want done. The Overview describes what it can do.

Ask

Use Ask to understand how code works, find where something happens, or compare approaches before you decide. Switch to Agent when you want the change made.

Plan and Ask tell CodeNeter not to change your project, apart from saving the plan. They guide its behavior rather than removing tools, so your approval settings apply in every mode.
